There’s nurture. There’s nature. And then there’s something that lives right in the center of the Venn diagram between the two: the parts of a being that are so deeply woven in, that without them, they simply wouldn’t be who they are.
Those are the traits that make us all Unapologetically Me.
Over the years, society has grown more comfortable not just accepting, but embracing our full selves—and encouraging others to do the same. Phrases like “you do you” and “don’t yuck my yum” dot our everyday language now, reminding us that perfection isn’t the goal. Authenticity is.
So it felt only right to celebrate the dogs and cats at Austin Pets Alive! who embody that same truth.
Many of the pets in our care came to us because they needed a safety net—because something about their story, their body, or their behavior put them at risk. Maybe their original shelter ran out of space. Maybe they needed medical care or behavioral support that wasn’t available elsewhere. Whatever the reason, they found safety here.
But safety is only half the journey.
The real goal is home.
And for some pets, that journey takes longer—often because of a quirk that gives people pause. A dog who’s shy with strangers. A cat who needs help using the litter box. A pup who’s anxious, vocal, clumsy, wobbly, or just… a little different.
So this month, we’re doing something new.
We’re no longer explaining those traits away.
Because being nervous, or needing extra support, or moving through the world differently is not the sum of who a pet is—it’s just one small piece of a much bigger, richer story. A story that also includes loyalty, joy, resilience, affection, and the kind of love that changes lives.
Through Unapologetically Me, we’re shining a light on pets who have been waiting far too long for someone to see them fully—not just their challenges, but their magic.
And as Valentine’s Day approaches, we’ll be leaning into a simple truth:
You don’t adopt someone to change them.
You adopt them to love them exactly as they are.
If you’re ready to meet a pet who’s unapologetically themselves—and might just be perfectly imperfect for you—we’d love to introduce you.
