Make Positive Changes Happen for the Pets of Austin and the People Who love Them
For decades, entering the city’s animal shelter was a death sentence for most pets. Today, thanks in large part to community members using their voice and vote, Austin is the safest city in the country for shelter pets.
Overcrowding in our city’s municipal shelter is real and there are two paths that can be taken to solve this problem. Path one is euthanizing for space. Path two is ensuring that there are programs, processes, policies and community support to save more lives instead of ending them.
The role Austin Pets Alive! plays in the community is different from that of a taxpayer-funded municipal shelter. Our programs and the pets benefiting from them are built to support our mission. Our purpose in this community is to serve those animals who truly have no other options due to lack of resources within municipal shelters or within a private home.
We need advocates who can help us ensure good policies are in place to protect Austin’s most vulnerable animals. From writing emails to elected officials to speaking at Animal Advisory Commission meetings, we cannot do this alone. So many people move to Austin every day and don’t know where to take stray animals or where to adopt or foster an animal. We believe that there are enough homes for all the pets in Austin, but we know it takes work to find those homes; especially for medium and large dogs. There are many barriers to adoptions, will you help us advocate for finding these homes?

Austin Pets Alive! operates at the Town Lake Animal Center, built 75 years ago. We need help designing future spaces so the dogs and cats in our care can be in the safest kennels.
