Based in the heart of Texas, Austin Pets Alive! is proud of its roots and committed to making Austin the safest city in the country for shelter pets. Funded through individual donations and a small number of grants, we provide essential support to the people and pets of Austin in many ways.
In 2025, we took in more than 10,993 pets from across the state; 2,185 of those dogs and cats came to us directly from the city shelter, Austin Animal Services (formerly Austin Animal Center). Alongside our rescue efforts, we also provide crucial pet surrender prevention support through our PASS Program, offering resources and services to community members facing challenges keeping their pets.
Unlike taxpayer-funded municipal animal shelters, APA! operates programs designed specifically to save the lives of at-risk pets, the animals most vulnerable to euthanasia in traditional shelter systems. Through comprehensive, life-saving initiatives, we focus on pets who truly have no other options due to lack of resources within municipal shelters or within a private home.
